In a first, Pakistan to export cement to the US
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, one of the country’s largest cement manufacturers, DG Khan Cement Company (DGKC) Limited, will export cement to the United States. As per a report in Bloomberg, the cement maker is in the process to ship 50,000 tons to the US. A US-bound ship is currently loading cement at Karachi’s port for delivery to Houston.
It is pertinent to state that cement sales to the US will add to Pakistan’s export receipts during a time when the country is desperately exploring more avenues for business. As of May 2022, cement sales went down by 15.85 percent to 3.32 million tons compared to 3.94 million tons in the corresponding period last year.
As per data given by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), export dispatches witnessed a massive decline as they contracted 76.97 percent from 746,550 tons in May 2021 to 171,915 tons in May 2022.
In the first 11 months (July-May) of the ongoing fiscal year, total cement dispatches clocked in at 47.62 million tons (domestic and export), down by 8.8 percent during the same period last year.
