Centaurus Fire Incident: CDA to Carry Out a Fire Audit of High Rise Buildings
Islamabad: At the meeting presided over by Captain (r) Muhammad Usman Younis, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), it was decided to perform a post-fire structure stability report on all the multi-story buildings where the Centaurus Mall fire broke out on Sunday.
As a conclusion to the discussion, it was determined to conduct a fire audit on all structures taller than 50 feet. Furthermore, high-rise structures will also be put through a real-time mock exercise. The panel also noted the need to modernise the emergency disaster cell’s equipment and enhance emergency services response.
It is pertinent to state that the CDA Chairman declared that certificates would be given to employees of Rescue 1122 in Rawalpindi for their active participation in rescue and firefighting operations.
On Sunday, a sizable fire that had started at the 36-story Centaurus Mall was put out by the rescue and emergency services. However, no one was hurt, the blaze was entirely extinguished, and the structure was unharmed.
Firefighting efforts were assisted by the fire department, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, and Rescue 1122, according to CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Capt (r) Mohammad Usman Younis. In order to aid in the rescue efforts and prevent the flames from spreading to other stories of the structure, a helicopter crew was also sent. A huge fire broke out in the food court on the fourth floor of the shopping centre.
The CDA administration acknowledged that the fire was put out after two hours, but the cooling process took longer than that. Before conducting a search, Islamabad Police reported that rescue teams extracted those stuck inside the mall using a back entrance.
Prior to the technical team’s report on the towers’ structural viability following the fire incident, the Mall and its associated residential towers were sealed as a precaution.
