CDA Plans to Introduce an Intelligent Traffic System in Islamabad
On Monday, Captain (R) Muhammad Usman Younis, chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), convened a meeting on the topic to ease traffic problems in Islamabad.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, Member Engineering, Member Planning, SSP Traffic, and other CDA officers were present during the meeting.
The NUST University students gave a presentation at the meeting on the intelligent transportation system. It is important to note that the NUST students’ film about Islamabad’s transition from traffic lights to an automatic traffic system went popular on social media.
Due to the popular video, the CDA Chairman called these students to CDA headquarters to present their concept immediately. Capt (R) Younis was informed that this system would be camera-based, that cameras would be installed at each light, and that these cameras would be used to monitor the volume of traffic in order to automatically switch the signal green or red.
Similar to the last example, this system will automatically change to green when traffic pressure is strong so that more traffic may pass and residents do not have to deal with issues like traffic jams.
NUST students were also advised that specific tracking had been kept for the ambulances in this contemporary system so that, in the event that an ambulance arrives, it does not need to wait and may pass through easily.
On this occasion, the Chairman suggested that a location in the capital city where there is a high volume of traffic and there are two or more signals should be chosen as the site for the introduction of this intelligent transportation system as a pilot project in order to identify all the system’s flaws.
